We are going portaging this weekend, and the last time I did any "real" camping, (meaning i slept in a tent), was with these guys that you see above. It was me, 15 guys, and 17 dogs for 4 days in the middle of savannah. It was an old British army base located about an hour outside of Belize City. It was almost like a scene that you would envision from Lord of the Flies, but instead of the kids having spears, they carried handguns.
We woke up at 4am to go hunt this beast. They gave me a rifle. (scary thought)I have never shot anything in my life and wasn't about to start. So I sat in the back of the truck with the dogs and my rifle, applying vast amounts of SPF 45. It only took 5 hours to track down the beast; we weren't leaving or eating until we caught something.
I am not sure if I was enlightened or scarred by this experience. I did learn hunting and tracking techniques, I watched them skin the wild boar and then give the head, the bones and the carcass to the dogs to fight over. I bathed in a malaria infested swamp, cooked homemade tortilla's from scratch over the open fire, and I did eat that pig. It was delicious. The boys pulled out the tooth and made me a necklace with a string and some chestnuts as beads. Perhaps I should wear it to the office today.
So I am going camping for the first since, but I won't be hunting wild boar this time, I have my weiners and beans packed instead.
Have a great weekend everyone!
PS - I promise I will take nice touristy Ottawa shots next week. |
