| A few things.... first of all, I would really like to know how to process photos like this and this. Their photos almost have a surreal effect to them and I would love to know how they achieve this. I'm not even sure where to begin. Can anyone point me in the right direction? How do they do this?
I also had a hard time exposing the second photo properly. As you can see, I wasn't able to pull out the contrast between the white and black horse. Is there something I could have done differently. Perhaps in my processing? Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated today. Thanks!

Durham is one of my favourites. I've often thought about asking Kathleen Connolly what she uses for those exact effects, whether it be photoshop of some soft filter. You could try using diffuse glow, it can give you some similar results. I use it often for wedding pictures but haven't tried it really with anything else.

I really like how sharply that horse's fur comes out. Are these the horses that pull those carts through the Ottawa streets?
It looks like those other photos are using lens mounted filters. Although you should probably check with someone with more experience on that.

I would also like to know, if you find out, how to process photos like that. As for your black horse, I don't know if you already tried this, but it may help to select the black horse only with slight feathering, CTRL-L and adjust the levels. Btw, one of my comments (your mermaid post) disappeared.

I tried playing around with the diffuse technique. I have posted the original photo, the processed one and the psd so that you can go and look at the process. There are two quick examples of this processing technique. While I am not sure that;s how their results were achieved, I kind of like the results I was able to produce in about a half hour. Check it out. Click Here

Judging by the unnaturally blue (almost purple) colour of the sky in the the first photo of the puddle, it looks like it was taken with a polarizing filter of some sort. You can probably get one or two of these for your digital SLR without spending too much and then experiment. The second shot just looks like it was taken from a fair distance with a telephoto lens, resulting in the flattened background that you see. Regarding the contrast between the black and white horses, try using the auto-exposure bracket function on your camera. This function allows you to take three shots of varying exposures simultaneously. A standard exposure, one that's underexposed and one that's overexposed. Very often the subtle change will produce one of the three shots that's bang-on. Cheers!
