I went to the market last night to practice some night photography. This was not the shot that I intended to do, I am not sure of the composition, but I kinda like it nonetheless. Here is the same shot taken with different settings. I had a hard time choosing this morning. I think the one I posted turned out better, but I like the fountain and how the lights in the background look like twinkly stars in the second one. Thoughts anyone?

Both of these shots have been cropped slightly. Someone has commented recently that they have a beef with my cropping. Is this cheating?

Hmm .. I like the second one for the reason you posted .. the stary effect on the lights. very pretty. Also, cropping is not cheating. Photography is an artform with tools at your disposal. Just like being able to correct mistakes on a canvas, the same goes her. It's called being creative. Also, sometimes photographers are limited by the range of their lenses. so crop as you see fitting. :)

Great night time photography. Personally, I prefer the posted one; it's well exposed. The only thing that I'm wondering is; is the photo a little bit angled?

Andrew is right...angledto the right a little too much. Good shot none the less. Cropping is not at all cheating. I don't personally see it as enhancing an image, just tidying.

I will add my two cents worth about the whole "cropping and other post-processing" issues. When you print photos traditionally, you can dodge, burn and crop. Why is doing this with a digital camera any different. It's just a different kind of post-processing. And yah, what Sarah said.. It's your art. Do what YOU want and not what others want.

I agree with Kel and Sarah. The image is your vision. What you post/present is what you want the viewer to see. :)
