Myrna & Chico( 08.02.05 ) PREVIOUS :: CURRENT :: NEXT
This photo was taken 2 years ago to this day while I was working on an 6-month internship in Belize, Central America. It is one of my favourite photos. It is not for the quality of shot, but what this picture represents. I was working in the small town of San Ignacio, Cayo. Every morning on my way to work, I would see Myrna and her 6 brothers and sisters outside doing chores. Myrna was always with the Chico. Chico was a very special chicken. Many Belizean's have chickens or roosters for pets. I suppose thats not so stange as my parents gave me a pet goat. I could go on about my experiences in Belize, but to make a long story short, I befriended this family. Every day I would stop and say hello and bring candy or treats. In appreciation, the mother invited me in for lunch one day. She served me a big bowl of hot spicy soup, (that's fun to eat while it's 40C) rice and beans (that's a daily staple) a big glass of chunky banana juice; oh and of course the best part... chickens feet! As not to be rude, I ate the chickens feet, and choked back the chunky juice. This family lived off 200$ BZ dollars a month which is equivalent to 100$ US. I was not going to waste the food that the mother spent the entire morning cooking. While eating these chickens feet, I couldn't help but think... am I eating Chico? My internship in Belize was an experience I will never forget. This picture reminds me of how spoiled Canadians are, and how much we take for granted. A couple times a year, I will send Myrna and her brothers and sisters, books, clothes and toys. I am never sure if they receive it as Belize has some very corrupt Customs Officers. This is something I have also experienced first hand. I learned to bribe customs officers and other official people while I was away; that's a story for another day. If you would like to see the rest of the photos of my trip, you can view them here. They are also available on flickr.

This is a wonderful photo, what a beautiful little girl, and yes, we need to understand how fortunate we really are in Canada.

Christina, this is an awesome photo and an even better rememberance. Thank you for sharing both. Sometimes the most perfect photo is because of the subject not the pixels. This is just such a case. I love it!
