Yeah, I can see why it was messy. One remark though, maybe just play a bit with the depth of field to make the people in the background unclear so all the attention goes to the mud wrestlers. And by the way, you have some really nice photos in your FlickR slideshow of RiverPalooza.

yo mud wrestling is so fun. sometimes i just go in my backyard, take the hose and spray all of the soil and then i roll around in the mud because it is so fun to get covered in mud.
